Unfortunately retailers and brands’ product ranges can change quickly and it’s pretty hard to keep our database up to date 😓 !
So despite our best efforts, some products are still unknown to Eugene. When a product is not recognised, you have 2 choices:
1. Fill in the product’s information yourself
Thanks to your contribution, other people can make better choices!
Below is the list of product information we need in order to rate the product :
- Product and brand name
- Product’s category
- Packaging information
- Nutritional facts
- A picture of the ingredients
2. Wait until we fill in the information
If you you don’t want to do it yourself, you can wait for us to fill in the missing information. When a scanned product is not recognised, or is incomplete, we aim to fill in the correct product information within 15 days (this may be longer for non-food products such as medicine, clothing etc.).
Filling in this information, especially when you don’t have the product right in front of you, can be painstaking work, but we have a great tech team that has developed a wonderful algorithm to make this easier.
Where does the product data come from?
Eugene uses several sources to get a product's information :
- Retailers : Some brands and retailer agree to give us direct access to their product catalogues. This information corresponds with that on the product label, and does not pose a conflict of interest.
- Crowdsourcing : Your contributions, that we review and validate on a daily basis.
Why does the app recognise more products than my device?
To make sure that the sorting instructions load quickly, the product database is stored locally on the device. This means that your Eugene device does not access data in real time, unlike your application. As a result of this, recently added product information will not immediately appear on the device, although it will on the app.
Your device will download a new version of the central product database every night. You don’t have to do anything, apart from making sure that your wifi remains active.
